Hypochlorous acid, often shortened to HOCl, shows up on more and more pet care labels: dental sprays, ear rinses, eye washes and skin sprays. If the name sounds like a harsh chemical, that is an understandable reaction. Here is what it actually is, why it is used, and what to know before you use it on your dog or cat.

What is hypochlorous acid?

Hypochlorous acid is a mild acid made of hydrogen, oxygen and chlorine. It is the same molecule your pet's own immune system makes: white blood cells produce it to fight infection. In pet care products it is used in water at very low concentrations.

Is hypochlorous acid safe for dogs and cats?

At the low concentrations used in pet care products, yes. It is non-toxic and non-irritating, which is why it is used around sensitive areas like the mouth, ears and eyes. Furaqua uses 0.015% in its Pet Dental Spray and 0.012% in its Ear Rinse. At 0.015%, the dental spray is safe even if your pet swallows it.

As with any new product, stop using it and talk to your vet if you notice redness, swelling or discomfort.

Is hypochlorous acid the same as bleach?

No. Household bleach is sodium hypochlorite, a different, much harsher compound that is used at far higher strength for cleaning surfaces. Hypochlorous acid is mild enough to be made by the body itself. Never use household bleach, or a homemade bleach dilution, on your pet or anywhere near their mouth, eyes or ears.

Why is hypochlorous acid used in pet dental sprays?

It is effective against bacteria, yeast and fungi. In the mouth, it helps with the bacteria behind bad breath and plaque, without the sting of alcohol. In Furaqua Pet Dental Spray it works alongside enzymes, Galla Japonica, Triphala, German chamomile, propolis and menthol.

What else is hypochlorous acid used for in pet care?

  • Ear cleaners: to cleanse ear wax, reduce germs and odor, and soothe itchy ears. Furaqua Ear Rinse uses 0.012%.
  • Eye rinses: some pet eye washes use it to gently flush discharge, debris and irritants.
  • Skin sprays: for cleansing minor skin irritation.

What if my pet licks or swallows it?

Dental sprays are made to be swallowed in normal use, so that is expected. Ear and eye products are not meant to be swallowed. A lick is unlikely to matter at these low strengths, but if your pet swallows a large amount of any product, call your vet.

How do I choose a safe hypochlorous acid product?

  • Pick a product made for pets, with clear use instructions for dogs and cats.
  • Check that the label lists hypochlorous acid and its concentration.
  • For the mouth, choose a formula with no xylitol and no alcohol.
  • Skip homemade mixes and anything based on bleach.

Can every pet use it?

Furaqua products are made for dogs and cats 12 weeks and older. If your pet has a medical condition or takes medication, check with your vet before starting any new product.
